This is the eating disorder characterized by excessive focus, even fixation on eating healthy foods which may lead to malnutrition and health problems related to nutritional deficiency.

This article tells the story about Kristie Rutzel who stopped eating anything processed, then went on to have only whole foods, progressed to organic. Now she is on a strictly vegan raw food diet ingesting little other than raw cauliflower and broccoli. She weighs 68 pounds and was required to seek medical assistance for anemia and osteopenia (calcium deficiency causes this, a precursor of osteoporosis).

So can healthy eating become a disorder? In a word yes; when it becomes an obsession, when it crosses the line over into malnutrition and particularly when the malnutrition begins to manifest itself in terms of health issues such as those experienced by Kristie Rutzel.

It is well known that being healthy requires exercise and consumption of the right foods.

In order to look and feel good it is necessary to stick to both exercise and nutrition regimens that are appropriate for the body.

Surely, continuous but not excessive exercise is the foundation of any effective nutrition and fitness plan.

In this case, diets should be prescribed by professionals in order to change people’s eating habits and get the best of any exercise routine.

However, many people are not aware of their eating habits when exercising. Some people don’t think about finding a dietician when designing a nutritional plan.

Sometimes, such nutritional plans are not the most suitable for people since they are based on their busy routines. This is the case of power bars which are appealing to those people that don’t have enough time to consume regular food.

Power bars can be useful to increase metabolic rates given that it requires ingesting a small meal every 2 or 3 hours. These bars can give an extra shot of energy when exercising for hours. But, this can be a harmful habit if they are taken as replacements of meals.

It’s quite important to be moderate when consuming power bars. Power bars should be used as snacks which will complement a nutritional regimen and not as meal replacements.

Exercise must be followed by a conscious nutritional plan including fruits, vegetables, and meat. There is no way to consider that all power bars can provide proteins and carbohydrates available in real food.

All the claims by producers and marketers of fish oil about the wondrous effects of a component of their products, Omega 3 fatty acids is enough to make anyone think that it is snake oil rather than fish oil they’re talking about!

You have likely read repeated claims that this is the one thing that will help you lose weight even as you continue to eat normally; even a high calorie intake.

So what is the real deal with Omega 3 or rather the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, to use the proper nomenclature?

In laboratory experiments conducted upon mice, it was seen that when fed a high calorie diet that included 8% fish oil rich in omega 3, gained less weight (by virtue of metabolizing more fat) than the other mice who are not given the omega 3 rich fish oil.

This study came to the conclusion that the group of mice that received the fish oil supplement demonstrated higher lipid metabolism.

The supplemented mice were also seen as having the activity of enzymes related to metabolism boosted significantly. Researchers saw an “up-regulation of intestinal lipid metabolism is associated with the anti-obesity effect of fish oil”.

A study conducted by the University of Georgia showed that Omega 3 “could affect adoptosis (programmed cell death) and significantly decrease the accumulation of fat in the preadipocytes in a dose-dependent manner and the development (differentiation) of mature adipocytes in culture” according to the Journal of Nutrition.

An Australian study also found that in one study conducted on 75 overweight adults between the ages of 25 and 65 years, it was found that those who got a fish oil supplement lost more weight than those who didn’t, when supplemented by exercise.

So clearly there is something to this fish oil business, and even if one is skeptical about all its miraculous weight loss properties (as one rightly should be), even then you cannot ignore the several health giving properties that it has. It is heart friendly, and is known to keep your brain working better so really there are plenty of reasons to consider this.

However, if one thought that taking a fish oil supplement will miraculously help them shed the pounds without lifting a finger, they would be sadly mistaken.

Yes it is likely that Omega 3 may help give you just that little bit extra when you are doing everything else right and will help rather than actually instigate weight loss all by itself.

Exercising has never been more popular than now. The trend that dictates healthy life is promoting exercising as one of the options for having it.

Expensive marketing campaigns are launched every day showing us how the perfect body should look like and giving us solutions to get to it.

Products and routines that promise effective fat burning and results in no time appear to be growing in numbers day by day.

Some claim one thing others claim another, it is hard to keep up and it is hard to know the truth. That is why a lot of studies and researches have been made. The truth must be known.

The recent studies show that while exercising besides burning calories and fat we also lose some of the essential and beneficial elements of our body.

It goes without saying that if the level of these elements drops the exercise is less effective than the case where this level stays put. It is just that simple.

What to do in order to make the exercise as effective as possible?

Well, having effective exercises is very important because such a routine generates results. The more effective the exercise is the better and faster the result will be. So basically, this means that effective exercises save you time. And this is something you would definitely want to achieve.

Introducing food that will increase the antioxidant levels in your body could be very helpful. Eating oranges, cherries, all sorts of berries, all sorts of beans, chili peppers, red cabbage, parsley, spinach, lemon, ginger or drinking green tea, will certainly boost these levels. And these fruits and vegetables are just a small part of the list containing food rich in antioxidants.

For example if an orange, or any other type of food from the list, is eaten after the fitness routine it will help the body rebuild the reserve and prevent the loss of hydration, thus making your exercising more effective.

Also the antioxidants give the body a lot of energy for an effective fitness routine, so taking them some time before exercising would also do you a lot of good.

As a conclusion, adjusting your diet so you will take sufficient antioxidants and continuing exercising giving your maximum effort will surely get you to your desired goal.

All you have to do is be patient and stick with it until you achieve the purpose. Patience and perseverance always guide you to a great result.

By now is it is a well known fitness fact that six smaller, more frequent meals are better than three big meals during the day.

Earlier the accent was on eating during meals and not snacking in between; now however, nutritionists and fitness experts have come down heavily in favor of the six small meals (or three meals and three healthy snacks depending upon how you look at it) as being good for health and for weight loss is that is one’s aim.

The converse view is that all that matters is how many calories you are eating at the end of the day; not in how many meals or snacks. However there are several arguments in favor of the 6 meal theory.

What this eating pattern does is it speeds up your metabolism helping you burn more calories than you would otherwise have done. The body is given the impression of plenty, giving it the signal that there is no need to store and horde calories in the form of fat rather that there are enough calories available for all the body’s needs. This is what keeps the metabolic rate up.

Also if you are dividing your daily intake of calories into 6 or more meals a day that means that you are taking in smaller portions at every meal. Cutting down on meal portions has repeatedly shown itself to be an effective weight loss gambit.

For many it is important to have that sit down meal rather than six or eight snacks. For these people they may continue to have three substantial meals of breakfast, lunch and dinner but also intersperse those with a mid morning snack, a snack late in the afternoon and perhaps a post dinner snack as well.

What this does is it helps a person not to get too hungry between meals. In particular the gap between lunch and dinner can get very long if a person has a big commute. Further when you do sit down to your meal, it will consequently be a smaller one; portions are likely to be smaller since you are not going to be starving.

Things to make sure when you have to take six meals are:

Make sure the meal portions are small not more than 500 calories

Make sure your snacks are healthy and low calorie not more than 100 calories

If you can do this, then 6 meals may well work really well for you!

This one still holds true in that you must have a healthy breakfast every day, it is the one meal you should not be skipping.

It should be a healthy but hearty combination of carbs and protein that will give you sustained energy all through the day.

Breakfast helps you build muscle

Since the stomach is empty in the morning this is the right time for it to fill it full of nutrients which the body will be more receptive to in the morning.

A high protein breakfast is helpful in one’s aim to gain lean muscle.

You won’t overeat during the day

If you have had a nutritious breakfast in the morning, you will feel full and satisfied for a longer time as a day progresses and you won’t be ravenous when the next meal time comes along, making it less likely that you will over eat.

You have more energy throughout the day

A healthy well balanced breakfast will make sure that your body has the fuel and the energy to face the day ahead and not flag or feel tired.

That one item that has long been a constant at our breakfast tables, has earned quite a bad rap in recent years.

Keep being told that white bread is bad for you, for your health; why exactly is this so? What is it about white bread that is so bad for you? There are several reasons:

Refined flour

The refining of wheat flour strips it of many of the nutrients and health giving properties that wheat has.

The wheat germ and bran, which are the most nutritious part of the wheat grain, which includes vitamins and minerals are removed when making refined flour. What remains are starch and some protein.

The protein is not good quality protein. The starch is converted into sugar and is stored in the body as fat. Refined flour provides what are sometimes known as empty calories, or calories without the goodness or nutritional value of wholesome food.

Low Fiber

Fiber is essential for the healthy functioning of the human body and for the efficient working of the digestive system. In milling of refined flour, the fiber of the wheat grain is removed and what is left is not healthy.

Lack of sufficient fiber in the body also makes it difficult for the colon to evacuate the bowels of waste matter effectively, which can lead to Irritable Bowel Syndrome and even cancer of the colon.[colon cancer]

Digestive rates and the efficiency with which the food is digested slow down. There are also greater amounts of fat deposits and this increases how negatively eating white bread can impact health.

Bleaching

Ever wonder why that loaf of white bread is so white when the grain that it supposedly comes from is brown? Well the fact is that the flour that is used to make the bread is routinely bleached using chemicals, which results in the white color.

There are several harmful bleaching agents used for this and among them is chloride oxide, which, when combined with whatever proteins are still left in the flour, produces alloxan. This is a poison and has been used to produce diabetes in laboratory animals. Chlorine oxide destroys the vital wheat germ oil which is another nutritive element destroyed.

For someone who is used to eating white bread all their lives, the switch to whole grain bread (as against brown bread, which may simply have some caramel added for the color) may be a bit difficult however one can soon get used to it, and can also start to appreciate a healthier and tastier meal option.

Cholesterol is naturally found in the body, but there are two different varieties of it and an improper diet can lead to the second, known as LDL which is bad for you can, in turn, lead to a high risk of heart disease and eventually even a fatal heart attack if you do not take proper care of yourself.

Although high cholesterol is inherited and genetic, a simple test to see if you have it can help you control it before it becomes a problem in your life.

Of course, understanding cholesterol can also help you combat it and help you enrich your diet so that it never becomes a major problem to your health as well.

As mentioned, there are two kinds of cholesterol, HDL which is your good cholesterol, and LDL the bad cholesterol. When your body starts to form an excess of LDL this is an indication that you are probably developing blockages in your heart arteries which makes it harder for blood to circulate to and from the heart.

When the blockage becomes too severe, which happens when your LDL levels are extremely high, your artery will spasm and stop working which is what causes a heart attack which can be fatal if not treated promptly.

On the other hand, when you have high HDL cholesterol levels, the good cholesterol helps prevents blockages from forming, this is a sign that you are a very low risk for future heart disease.

The best way to find out your current level of cholesterol is by heading to your primary care provider or local health fair and asking for a blood cholesterol test if you have not already had one.

Keep in mind however there are still other risk factors for heart disease that may affect you even with normal cholesterol such as diabetes, smoking, and high blood pressure so be sure to mention these to your doctor as well.

If you find out that you have high cholesterol you may or may not have to take medication to control the future continual elevation of your LDL levels. If you have a high cholesterol level of HDL but also a high LDL level your doctor may suggest that you improve your diet and current amount of daily exercise.

However, if you have a history of heart disease in your family even with an LDL level that is high you may still be advised to take medication.

Outside of medication, you are the sole person who can control the amount of cholesterol in your body. Eating a low fat healthy diet that is low on saturated fats and cholesterol can help alter your cholesterol levels immensely.

A proper exercise routine is also instrumental in keeping your cholesterol levels down and your heart safe from disease.

Most people have hectic lives and very little free time. This is why trying to work in a daily fitness regime can be hard enough without trying to figure out what the proper diet should be for the best results.

However, whether you like to hear it or not, 80% of what you get out of a daily workout routine is directly tied into what type of nutrition you get on a regular basis.

Thus, diet cannot be ignored, and diets can be tough, so instead of trying out a fad diet you may find it easier to study the following tips that will help you achieve better nutrition and maximum results.

First off, you need to get used to reading the labels of every item of food that you purchase at the grocery store. Simply comparing brands or food items may help you make better choices and leave harmful choices behind.

To help you out, as a general guideline the shorter the ingredient list the healthier the product probably is for you.

While reading these labels, keep in mind that a healthy diet does not include high amounts of sugar. This is because sugar causes the body to release insulin and insulin is very often converted to fat in the body. Thus the more sugar you eat the higher the chances that you will gain weight.

Also, sugar often actually causes hunger pains and food cravings, so the more excess sugar you eat; the more likely you are to eat even more. This is a cycle you do not want to start.

On the other hand, you do want to look for labels on food that have a sizable amount of healthy fats in them. While most people assume that fat is always bad, healthy fats such as nuts, seeds, avocados, or cold pressed oils can actually help you trim weight and feel fuller. So, watch your labels to make sure you include at least 20% of healthy fats into your calorie count.

Now that you have heard the good news, here are a few more items to avoid that you most likely already know but don’t want to hear: cut the soda and white flour. Yes soda is yummy, but it is also full of unneeded sugars and is the most abused source of empty calories.

Water will hydrate you and quench your thirst without adding to your calorie count, so place the soda back on the shelf and move on. White flour is also tasty and usually much cheaper than wheat bread, but it is also pretty devoid of any nutritional value and loses most of the natural nutrients of bread products, so always choose the closest wheat varieties you can find.

Lack of zinc is widely linked to wide range of health problems including impaired immunity and fertility.

As we all know the fact that shellfish is rich source of zinc mineral that helps in better bodily functions, from muscle building to healthy immune response. But do you know that you can get a daily dose of zinc with a portion of beef steak?

Zinc is found in many foods, including chicken, nuts and legumes. But, despite this, the World Health Organisation estimates that one third of the global population is zinc-deficient.
