The main methods to measure weight are body mass index (BMI), waist circumference and waist to hip ratio.
Ideal weight is exactly estimated by considering the body composition such as how much your body weight contains fat and how much lean mass.
To attain good health, your body weight should not contain more than 30 percent if you are a woman and 20 percent if you are a man.
Body mass index (BMI) for measuring ideal weight: To measure ideal weight, the best method is body mass index. The average range of BMI should be 18.7 to 23.8 for women and 20.1 to 25.0 for men.
Waist circumference for ideal weight: Waist circumference specifies the fat collected around the mid-section of the body. Fat collected around mid-section is more dangerous than fat collected around other parts of the body. If you have high waist circumference, you will suffer from diseases like diabetes and heart disease.
Waist to hip ratio for ideal weight: Waist to hip ratio is measured by measuring the level of two bones in front of the hips and then the waist circumference is divided by the hip circumference. Men should have waist to hip ratio below one and women should have 0.8.
To estimate the ideal weight:
- A five feet woman should have 100 pounds
- Five pounds per inch should be added above five feet or deduct five pounds per inch below five feet
- To find healthy range, you should add and deduct ten percent
- A five feet man should be 108 pounds
- 6 pounds per inch should be added above five feet or six pounds per inch should be deducted below five feet.
- To find ideal weight range, you should add and deduct ten percent.

Grip your wrist using your thumb and index finger.
- If your thumb and finger do not touch, you are a large frame
- If your thumb and finger just touch, you are a medium frame
- If your thumb and finger overlap, you are a small frame

Body mass index (BMI) is defined as the measure of body fat based on weight and height that applies to men and women. The healthy weight range will depend on Body Mass Index (BMI).
Too much body fat can lead to illnesses and other health problems. Therefore, you have to watch your body mass index to maintain healthy weight.
BMI is one way of assessing your health. It does not measure your body composition, that means your body fat and muscle re not measured.

BMI of 19 to 24: This is the healthy BMI range. If you have BMI within this range, you have low risk of developing health problems due to your weight.
BMI of 25 to 29: This range is considered as overweight range. If you have BMI within this range, you can have moderate risk of developing health problems related to your weight.
BMI of 30 and over: This range is the obese range. If you have BMI 30 and over, you have high risk of developing health problems related to your weight.

Waist to hip ratio calculator
It is not only the amount of body fat you have, but also where in your body the fat is stored that impacts your health. Your waist to hip ratio is an important tool that helps to determine your overall health risk.
If you have more weight around your waist, you are at greater risk of lifestyle related diseases such a diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack than those with weight around their hips.
To determine whether you have healthy waist to hip ratio, take a measuring tape to measure the circumference of your hips at the widest part of your buttocks. Then measure your waist circumference that is just above the belly button, which is smaller circumference of your natural waist.
To determine the ratio, waist measurement should be divided by hip measurement. According to the research, people, who have apple shaped bodies (more weight around the waist) face more health risks than people with pear shaped bodies (more weight around the hips).
