Skin disorders

Specialists say that some of the dietary supplements can cause skin changes and skin rashes. These are caused by the components of the dietary supplements that people might be allergic to.

The sad truth is that not all the manufacturers report all of the ingredients of the products and some of the harmful ingredients could be listed as fillers.

The most common ingredients that cause negative effects of dietary supplements include fish oil and nuts. There are some other ingredients as well that can cause problems, such as cranberry, zinc, essential oils, ginseng, Echinacea and gingko biloba.

Gastrointestinal problems

When thinking about the dietary supplements side effects, you should know that there are a lot of supplements that cause gastrointestinal problems. Usually they cause bloating and gas, but usually these are mild problems. On the other hand the ephedra-like supplements lead to severe gastrointestinal difficulties.

Chinese ephedra cannot be used in the US because of the adverse effects. These include hepatitis, nervousness, seizures and stroke. Some of the weight loss supplements can cause severe electrolyte imbalances.

Headaches

Side effects of dietary supplements include headaches. The pills that usually lead to this side effect include melatonin, St. John’s Wort and ephedra. If you take pills rich in gingko, they can also lead to headaches, dizziness and seizures. Ginseng can also cause headaches and low or high blood pressure.

Thyroid issues

The photoestrogens that the soy-based supplements have can lead to changes of the thyroid functions. Since the ingredient acts like estrogen, women can see changes in the uterus’ lining and in the breast’s tissues.

The manufacturing companies are supposed to print on the packages the dietary supplements side effects. Nonetheless they don’t always do so because who would want to buy supplements that cause side effects? This is why it is better to talk to your health care provider before taking any kind of supplement, organic or not.
