New Drug Makes Weight Loss Safer, Study Suggests

Until now, there has been no safe, long-term medical remedy that tackles unwanted weight gain. Dr. Nir Barak of Tel Aviv University’s Sackler School of Medicine has developed what could be a new weight-loss wonder drug.

In conjunction with the drug company Obecure, Dr. Barak developed a new formulation called HistaleanTM, based on betahistine, an approved drug marketed worldwide for the treatment of vertigo.

There is a new weight loss drug available in the market called betahistine. Researchers conducted a study for a month on this drug. The person lost 4 pounds per week. This drug has been in use for the treatment of vertigo.

Betahistine comes in tablet form and can be taken orally. Betahistine has a strong attraction for histamine H3 receptors and a weak attraction for histamine H1 receptors.

Betahistine works on the part of the brain called histamine receptor. It sends signal to the stomach to tell it to take small amounts of food. You will get fuller faster and you will not feel hungry so easily.

The histamine receptors play an important role in controlling appetite and food consumption and the benefit of activating these receptors can have in suppressing the desire for fat consumption.

Some of the drugs that are existing in the market for obesity are linked with suicidal behaviors and depression, but there are no such reports with this drug. Already existing weight loss pills are slow in reducing weight in seriously obese people and they have to go for surgery.

Obesity surgery can be sometimes potentially dangerous; therefore betahistine could be used as an alternative for weight loss.

Before taking betahistine for weight loss:

  • If you are trying for a baby, pregnant or breastfeeding
  • If you suffer from asthma
  • If you had any allergic reaction to any medications
  • If you are currently taking any medications
  • If you are suffering from peptic ulcer

In all the above conditions, you should consult the doctor before taking this drug.

Side effects with betahistine:

  • No sedation or drowsiness
  • Gastric side effects are less
  • Driving performance is not impaired
  • Antidopaminergic effects are low
  • Nausea can be a side effect

As this drug has very few side effects compared to other drugs available in the market and is proved to be safe, it can be used for weight loss.
